What is a D.O.?

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine are fully licensed physicians who have a more holistic approach to medicine with emphasis on the full body treatment. Osteopathic doctors complete four years of medical school and at least three years of residency just like their MD counterparts, and then get extra training in the musculoskeletal system that is learned on top of traditional medicine training. This means that DOs spend extra time learning to use their hands to diagnose and treat patients with OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment).

What is OMT?

OMT stands for Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy and is a hands-on technique that is used to diagnose, treat, and prevent injuries. The exam starts off with a head-to-toe assessment that looks for abnormalities in the muscles, spine, as well as joints. These abnormalities can come from simple movements that you may be doing everyday (an example may be carrying a heavy purse on one side for multiple hours everyday). Techniques are then used to help align your body that helps to improve range of motion. There are various techniques that are used to treat these areas. Stretches and exercise are then given to the patient in order to continue to see results after the visit.
